Sir John M. Templeton Fellowship Essay Contest is held every year for the students who are taking higher education and junior faculty. The 2010 Sir John M. Templeton Fellowship will be awarded for the best essay on the topic:
“Everyone wants to live at the expense of the state. They forget the state wants to live at the expense of everyone.”
—Frederic Bastiat (1801–1850)
Assuming Bastiat is correct, what ideas or reforms could be developed that would make people better aware that government wants to live at their expense?
The essay contest is in the honor of Sir John M. Templeton which is co-sponsored by John M Templeton Foundation and Independent Institute. The essay contest is open for students who are:
- 35 years of age or younger as of May 3, 2010
- Currently enrolled in college or university
- Must be pursuing any of the degree-associate, undergraduate, post graduate or doctoral
- Full time or part time students
- Citizen of any country and living in any country
Eligibility For Junior Faculty Member :
- 35 years of age or younger as of May 3, 2010
- Junior faculty members must hold a position of Assistant Professor or higher and not be tenured as of Fall 2010.
- Citizen of any country and living in any country
Prizes for the winner students:
First Prize: $2,500
Second Prize: $ 1,500
Third Prize: $ 1,000
Junior Faculty Members
First Prize: $ 10,000
Second Prize: $ 7,500
Third Prize: $ 4,000

The winning essay will be published in popular journals, magazines and other outlets. Winners name will be advertised through institute’s website and they may be also called to speak at the Institute’s seminar series or other forums.
