The Open Training and Education Network, OTEN, is the largest provider of distance education and vocational training in Australia. OTEN is part of the award winning TAFE NSW-Western Sydney Institute, national winner of the 2010 Large Training Provider and 2011 Skills for Sustainability at the Australian Training Awards. We offer world-class distance education services and products to more than 60,000 students in over 200 TAFE NSW courses. These courses give our graduates nationally recognised qualifications through the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). These qualifications are highly valued by industry and the wider community both in Australia and internationally
Most TAFE NSW courses are developed from National Training Packages. These are made up of integrated sets of nationally endorsed standards, guidelines and qualifications for training, assessing and recognising people's skills. Training Package qualifications also outline generic skills known as Employability Skills. These skills are achieved from participating in a range of work, learning and/or social activities. Employability Skills assist in gaining employment or moving along a career path. To access this information you will need the qualification National Code which you can find on each course page from Find a course.

We were very proud to celebrate 100 years of distance education in New South Wales in 2010. To commemorate this very important milestone, an e-book was written to record the many wonderful anecdotes and reflections from past and present staff and students and to demonstrate how our business has transformed along the way. Please click on the image below to read more about this.To track the progress of distance education over the years, see historical dateline of events.
