Midland College was established in 1969 when the residents of Midland — by a margin of almost four to one voted to become a part of the Permian Junior College System, composed of Midland College and Odessa College. The school expanded in 1972 with the formation of the Midland College District. Bonds in the amount of $5.1 million were issued for construction of a 115-acre campus and groundbreaking for the new campus was held in October 1973. Al G. Langford was named first president of the new institution. The main campus of Midland College is located at 3600 North Garfield. In addition, the school operates an Advanced Technology Center, Cogdell Learning Center, an Aviation Maintenance Technology Hangar, Child Care Center, and the Petroleum Professional Development Center throughout the community. Midland College classes are also held at the Williams Regional Technical Training Center in Fort Stockton. Today, Midland College offers more than fifty associate degree and certificate options, and is a Level II (four-year) institution, accredited to offer a Bachelor of Applied Technology (BAT) degree.
