IHMA was established in 2004 to assist Australian Apprentices/Trainees and International Students gain the necessary knowledge and skills in the Australian Hospitality Industry and to be able to competently compete for employment in Hospitality in Australia and/or in other counties around the world via the utilisation of Student Services and processes. IHMA aims to achieve outcomes expected of traditional time served apprentices. Importantly, IHMA is a strong proponent of exposure to real commercial pressures to assist students gain real workplace competence in a range of cuisines and circumstances.
IHMA offers face to face course delivery as the standard delivery methodology. However, IHMA has 2 Internet enabled Information Technology Laboratories fitted out with Personal Computers (PCs). These PCs are currently available to students for open use and to complete research and assignment tasks for certain subjects.

The Institute of Hotel Management Australia's (IHMA) head office is located close the center of the Central Business District (CBD) of the City of Melbourne (Melbourne).
